| Bull Fighting: Bullfighting is considered an art form as much as a sport; the leading matadors are national celebrities and there are fights most days on TV. A bullfight begins with a horseback procession, or Corrida, followed by the fight tself; the bull is softened up by picadores and then the matador moves in for the kill. Many foreigners detest the spectacle - but it is undoubtedly an important aspect of Spanish culture. |

971290012Horse-racing. Hipodromo Son Pardo, Palma Europe's first floodlit racecourse opened in 1965. Trotting races (carreras) are held around a 1-km track at 4:30 on Sundays in winter and 9 on Friday evenings in summer. Trotting is a form of racing in which the jockey sits in a small cart behind the horse and must prevent the horse from breaking into a gallop. It has been popular in Mallorca and Menorca for at least 200 years. If you go to a race meeting, remember that betting is an essential part of the process.
